[Please excuse the minor audio difficulties that we encountered on this show]
“Business and giving back shouldn’t be two different things”
Jess Ekstrom is the founder and CEO of Headbands of Hope, a company she started as a junior in college in 2012. For every headband sold, a headband is given to a child with cancer.
Headbands Of Hope has been featured on the TODAY Show, Vanity Fair, Seventeen, Good Morning America and more. But more importantly, they've donated over 100,000 headbands to every children's hospital in the United States and 6 countries. Jess is also a professional speaker, author, and writer for Entrepreneur and The Huffington Post.
“Social responsibility in business is not a trend. Giving back is going to be an expectation for businesses”
This week, Execution and People at the Best Strategy on the Inspiring Leaders Podcast.
“The days of the Superhero are gone. These are the days of the Justice League.”
Joseph Elkhoury is an industry Advisor for Upstream Oilfield Services and Digitalization in Oil and Gas . He served as Chief Operating Officer of TETRA Technologies, Inc. (TTI) from 2014 until 2017 where he managed around 5,000 employees and over $1.2B in revenue with several divisions offering products and services in many domestic and international markets. Joseph also served as a member of the Board of Directors of CSI-Compressco (CCLP) from 2015 until 2017. But it was during his tenure at TETRA Tech that Joseph envisioned, designed and rolled out “Dedicated To The Core” where employees were rated on 16 essential behaviours that directly contributed to the company’s core mission. It has been hailed as one of the most effective strategic planning and performance management systems anywhere.
“Life gives you the Test first, then the Lesson”
Controlling Bosses feel their experience and proficiency led to their advancement and entitle them to make all the decisions. They may or may not be Micromanaging Bosses, but they certainly insist on controlling the decision-making within their team. They will decide and who holds the Veto Power.
The problem with Controlling Bosses is they undervalue contributions from their team and peers, believing that the best decisions will come from within rather than others. This ego-centric perspective results in others that give up on being heard and lose faith that their contributions will be valued. As a result, the Controlling Boss becomes a bottleneck for the Team’s output. They can only produce results at the pace of the Boss rather than the exponential capacity of the team. Plus, a lack of perspective evolves when decisions are centralized, and the magic of diverse thought and innovative ideas is lost.
