Non-Profit Leadership is a calling, an opportunity to serve with passion for what matters most. This week on Inspiring Leaders, we learn about authentic leadership from the CEO of the Ottawa Mission, Peter Tilley.
“If you are a CEO or COO and every morning is an exercise in drudgery, get out, take that leap of faith and have courage” Peter Tilley has served in remarkable roles for decades, including a management role at Quantum Management Services in the 1990s. But in 1994, joined the Ottawa Food Bank as a driver and worked his way up to become their Executive Director, overseeing all aspects of this non-profit that shipped out 8 million pounds of food with a budget of $4M per year, responsible for 25 staff and countless volunteers. “Passion is a defining feature of any great leader”
Four years ago Peter began overseeing the Ottawa Mission, including more than 100 employees and a huge team of inspired volunteers. The Mission was founded over a hundred years ago by a group of Christian businessmen who wanted to help others facing difficult times, providing food, shelter and clothing. Today, the Mission is viewed as an important piece of the City’s social fabric. Along with providing shelter for 235 men on a nightly basis and serving 1,200 meals per day, The Mission provides a number of client services that enable men and women to cope with the challenges they face in their everyday lives.
“Have that courage that in five years from now you’ll be looking back thinking I made the right choice” Over the past 15 years The Ottawa Mission has incorporated new programs, such as a Hospice, Addiction Treatment, Client Services Centre, Learning Centre and a Medical/Dental Clinic. “The Volunteers here keep me motivated!” Links: Peter on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/peter-tilley-b28b7947 Peter on Twitter: @peter_tilley Peter’s Email: ptilley@ottawamission.com The Ottawa Mission: https://ottawamission.com Donations to The Ottawa Mission: https://secure3.convio.net/omf/site/Donation2?idb=1011194527&1400.donation=form1&df_id=1400&mfc_pref=T&idb=0&s_locale=en_CA Leadercast: www.leadercast.comhttps://www.leadercast.com
